California Juneteenth National Freedom Day Observance

In July 2002, Governor Gray Davis signed Assembly Bill 1749 (AB1749) into state law, observing every third Saturday in June as Juneteenth National Freedom Day for the State of California. This bill was amended in 2003, and is now recorded in legislation under Senate Bill 812 (SB812). AB1749 was authored by Juneteenth America, Inc. and sponsored by Assemblymember John Longville (Rialto-D).

During a special ceremony in June 2006 held at the 17th Annual Pomona Valley Family Juneteenth Celebration in Ganesha Park, Pomona, a monument was unveiled in the park to mark the history of the California Juneteenth Hoilday movement in the Inland Empire. Referencing language used in the official holiday bill (SB812), the monument honors the legacy of African-Americans and their contributions to America.
